Stray Is Getting An Animated Film

Posted by

Stray, the surprise hit indie video game released in July last year, is set to make its way to the big screens as an animated film, announced by Annapurna, the game’s publisher. Annapurna Animation, known for its debut feature Nimona, will be adapting this 2022 adventure game, marking the first of many game-to-film adaptations in Annapurna Interactive’s pipeline. While details like the director and cast for the Stray movie remain undisclosed, Annapurna Animation is guided by former Disney Animation executives Robert Baird and Andrew Millstein.

In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Robert Baird shed light on the essence of the game, emphasizing its exploration of what it means to be human, albeit featuring no actual humans. Instead, Stray offers a delightful buddy-comedy narrative centered around a robot and a cat, showcasing a unique and humorous dynamic. The absence of humans is a key ingredient contributing to the game’s popularity, allowing players to experience the world from the adorable feline’s perspective. Adapting this essence to the film is a challenge that Annapurna Animation is eagerly embracing, underlining the core of the story and its significance.

Stray, developed by the French studio BlueTwelve, unfolds in a post-apocalyptic world devoid of human presence. Players take control of a cat, navigating its quest to reunite with its friends, accompanied by sentient robots it befriends along the way, including the endearing flying drone named B-12. As one of the standout games from the past year, Stray earned accolades like the Best Debut Indie title at the Game Awards and recently made its debut on Xbox. As this captivating journey prepares to transition to the silver screen, it’s sure to bring its unique charm to a wider audience.
